Savitri Brat 2025: Date, Puja Vidhi, Katha, and Significance

Savitri Brat 2025 Date
Savitri Brat is commemorated on Monday, May 26 in 2025. It is fallen on Jyeshtha Amavasya according to the Hindu calendar, mainly by Odia, Bihari, and a portion of Uttar Pradesh married women.

What is Savitri Brat?
Savitri Brat (or Savitri Amavasya) is a religious vrat in which married women seek long life and good health for their husbands. This vrat is performed in the name of Devi Savitri, who by her firm faith and intelligence, rescued her husband Satyavan from death.

Puja Vidhi (Worship Procedure)
Women who are keeping the vrat wake up early, bath early, and dress in new or clean traditional clothes—most often red, yellow, or colorfully hued sarees, sindoor, bangles, and other suhag marking accessories.

The puja consists of:

  • Keeping a Savitri-Satyavan metal or earthen idol.
  • Worshipping with fruits, nine grains (navadhanya), seasonal tubers like mangoes or jackfruits, and water.
  • Offering sacred threads (typically 5 or 7) to a banyan tree (vat vriksha), the symbol of immortality and longevity.
  • Hearing the Savitri Katha (narration), in which the story of the bravery and devotion of Savitri is narrated.
  • Women break the fast after dusk or as soon as the rituals are over.

Savitri Brat Katha: The Legend of Immortal Love
Savitri was a devout and courageous woman. When God of Death, Lord Yama, arrived to take the life of her husband Satyavan, she followed him courageously behind. She impressed Yama with her integrity and devotion, and he therefore gave her a boon. Savitri wisely requested the life of her husband, and thus Satyavan came back to life.

This story is not only about marrying love, but also of unshakeable belief, courage, and intellect.

Local Significance
This vrat is wonderfully celebrated in Odisha. Women dress up in lovely traditional sarees, paint alta (red colour) on feet, and follow the ritual with immense sincerity.
In Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, it is followed similarly but better known commonly as Vat Savitri Vrat.

Religious Significance

The vrat is the exhibition of the strength, loyalty, and the power of real love of a woman. It is not just a ritual but also an exhibition of the inner strength and mental toughness in women.
